Who we are and where we're going.
I am really just starting out in the Boer business. I have had goats on and off in the past, but they were always more or less pets. I never considered making a profit on them, but I have always loved goats. I heard about Boer goats a few years back and really liked them. I have been watching them for a while now. I was breeding/training horses, but the horse market is WAY down, and I really needed to do something to make my farm profitable (check out the For Sale page for a few horses). I fiddled with a few ideas and decided on Boer goats. I currently have grade, percentage and fullblood goats. I couldn't afford to start out with all Fullbloods, but I needed something to generate income and keep my buck busy while I worked on a Fullblood herd. Unfortunately, I overdid it with bucks, so if you look at the For Sale page you will see some offerings. Right now I am waiting for my first kids to hit the ground so I can better evaluate my herd. I am looking to raise a herd that survives on pasture/forage/hay. I am expecting my herd to be able to get bred, lay down and kid, and stand up and raise their kids. There will be no room at Triple B Ranch for any animal that cannot meet that performance quota. Check out our Cull Factors page to see what else we are breeding for.
A Touch of Color
When I first started my boer breeding adventure I had every intention of sticking with traditional goats. Then I got jealous. I saw other breeders (boer and otherwise) getting to pick out "neat" looking goats, and I had to have a white goat with a red head. Of course I had plenty of oportunity to be picky with confirmation, but I wanted something that looked a little different. I have done my best not to select color over quality, but I have picked up some colored animals when the quality was there. My colored animals will be expected to meet the same rigorous culling as the other animals in the herd. I will breed for health first and looks second. Unfortunately, I think some colored goat breeders breed for color first. I will do my best not to do this. If anyone notices me doing this please contact me: myhorses3@aol.com and give me a reminder. I don't want to sacrifice the quality of my goats for ANYTHING.
